Dining in the Byron Bay hinterland

Byron Bay is renowned for a plethora of award winning restaurants, using an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce. But don’t overlook the nearby hinterland - a short drive out of town will reward you with excellent food, spectacular surroundings and country charm. Below are a few of our favourites.

Harvest Newrybar

Firm favourite of locals and visitors alike, Harvest is a mandatory inclusion on any culinary tour of the Byron hinterland. Housed in a charming Queenslander with a postcard perfect kitchen garden, this bakery/deli/fine diner utilises the best local and indigenous ingredients in delicious dishes that you will be talking about long after your visit.

Ciao Mate Bangalow

A recent and very welcome addition to the Bangalow food scene, this fun Italian diner is a great place for an elevated casual family meal. Think gourmet pizzas, organic wine, delicious salads and sides.

Frida’s Field

Nestled in rolling paddocks, this family run restaurant on a regenerative farm captures the true farm-to-table dining experience, with dishes prepared from ingredients grown and raised on the property. Enjoy shared long table dining in the converted barn with spectacular views.

The Hut

Housed in an historic school building in tiny Possum Creek, The Hut serves Mediterranean style food, using the best of Northern Rivers produce. Expect Greek and Italian style dishes with fresh, light flavours, combined with an excellent wine list - the ideal combination for a long, lingering holiday lunch.

Doma

This unassuming cafe in the tiny hamlet of Federal is home to some of the best innovative Japanese cuisine you will find anywhere. Don’t just take our word for it - the New York Times thought so too!
