Discover the Byron hinterland villages

Around 20 minutes drive from town through lush, green scenery, you will find the charming villages of the Byron hinterland. Here are a few of our favourites.

Federal

The tiny hamlet of Federal packs a punch - especially if you are a foodie. Famously reviewed by the New York Times, Doma cafe is arguably the best Japanese food you will find in the region. Set in a gorgeous garden setting, complete with roaming chickens, the fresh and innovative sushi, salads and brunch fare is worth the drive alone.  Among the handful of rustic buildings that comprise the village is Moonshine Coffee - in the words of Gourmet Traveller it may just be the best coffee you have all year.

Bangalow

Just a short drive out of Byron Bay town, Bangalow is a picturesque rural village full of interesting boutiques, awarded restaurants and cafes and historical architecture. If you happen to visit on a Saturday morning, pop into the weekly farmer’s market and try the delicious local produce on offer. On the 4th Sunday of the month, don’t miss the opportunity to sample local arts, crafts and produce and the Bangalow market.

Newrybar

Just down the road from Bangalow is Newrybar, home of the famous and much awarded Harvest Restaurant. Plan ahead and book a meal here to sample exquisite regional fare in this converted Queenslander, or pop into the deli to grab a selection of artisanal picnic fare - think cheese, patisserie items and excellent bread and coffee. Wander the tiny Main Street of Newrybar while you are here and pop into Newrybar Merchants for a curated selection of artisan homewares, fashion and artwork.

Mullumbimby

Known as “the biggest little town in Australia”, Mullumbimby is where you find the true hippie heart of the region, just 20 minutes from Byron Bay. Colourful characters, quirky local stores and excellent fresh food make this town unlike any other in the Byron shire. Don’t miss the highly awarded weekly farmer’s market held every Friday morning, for the best fresh food the region has to offer.
