Drive the Coolamon Scenic loop

Byron Bay may be known for the world’s best beaches, but don’t overlook the stunning nearby hinterland. Spend a day exploring the best of the surrounding landscape by driving the picturesque Coolamon Scenic loop, punctuated with rainforest, waterfalls, historic villages, cafes, artist studios, and roadside farm stalls.

Bangalow

Head just a few kilometres out of Byron Bay to the charming town of Bangalow for your first stop. Home to excellent markets, award winning dining and unique shopping, the historic buildings of the Main Street provide the perfect backdrop for a leisurely morning wander.

Coolamon lookout

Driving north from Bangalow, turn left at Coolamon Scenic Drive to enjoy breathtaking views of Byron Bay and the hinterland at the Cape Byron Lookout. It’s the perfect selfie spot!

Federal

Enjoy the gorgeous winding drive through verdant farmland and remnant rainforest as you make the short drive to the charming village of federal. Home to renowned Doma cafe, it’s the perfect spot for lunch

Minyon Falls

Venture around fifteen minutes inland to discover the ancient rainforest landscape of stunning Minyon Falls. It’s an easy walk to the viewing platform and picnic grounds from the carpark, where you can enjoy stunning vistas of the surrounding valley and majestic waterfall.

Crystal Castle

Head back towards the coast for around 15km to arrive at Crystal Castle. Set in 10 hectares of stunning gardens this unique experience is unlike any other in Australia. With two of the largest crystals found on earth, this magical sanctuary is the perfect peaceful place to slow down for a while.

Mullumbimby

Driving back down the hill and heading north, enjoy stunning views of Byron Bay’s coastline and imposing Wollumbin (Mt Warning). Stop on the way back to Byron in Mullumbimby, known as “The biggest little town in Australia”, and home to a colourful community with a hippie spirit. Wander the unique Main Street, take a soak in mineral baths at local favourite Banya Bathhouse, or grab a drink with the local colourful characters at the historic Middle pub, before making the short 15 minute trip back down the highway to Byron.
