Explore the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

A short drive from Byron town centre, you will find the start of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail - a popular scenic route for cycling and walking enthusiasts.

The trail follows the former rail corridor, which has been thoughtfully repurposed into a well-maintained, accessible track for both cycling and walking. The gentle gradient makes it ideal for all levels of fitness.

The Rail Trail offers a leisurely journey through the stunning landscapes of the region, and spans 24km from Crabbes Creek to Murwillumbah.

Your journey will pass through lush farmland, historic railway stations, and beautiful rural views. Local flora and fauna are plentiful, including glow worms inside the old rail tunnels.

Key stops along the trail include the heritage-rich town of Murwillumbah, home to the renowned Tweed Regional Gallery, and the quaint village of Stokers Siding. The trail also crosses the tranquil Rous River, offering peaceful spots to rest or take in the surroundings.

Access from Byron Bay is easy, with bike hire and shuttle services getting you to the start of the trail.
